Camping in the national park visitor area is available during the Easter, winter and spring Queensland school holidays. Big Bend camping area, reached by a 19.4km return walk, is open all year.

Accommodation is available just outside the national park all year round at Takarakka Bush Resort and seasonally at the Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge.

Camping permits are required and fees apply. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your campsite.

You can camp in the Carnarvon Gorge visitor area only during the Easter, Winter and Spring Queensland school holidays. At all other times of the year this area is closed to camping. The maximum length of stay at this camping area is 5 nights.

Features: Picturesque, semi-secluded camping area under a canopy of gums and Carnarvon fan palms.

Location: Between the carpark and the Carnarvon Gorge visitor centre.

Access: The camping area can be reached by conventional and 4WD vehicles and trailers. The last 15km of road is unsealed and may be impassable for conventional vehicles during wet weather as creeks may flood. Phone RACQ for road conditions before setting out.

Number of sites: 35 numbered sites. See table below for camp site details. Dimensions include vehicle parking on camp sites. Some sites may have trees, which will reduce suitability for some structures.

Camp sites are suitable for: details for each camp site are detailed in the table above. The camping area is not suitable for caravans or large motorhomes. These vehicles are catered for at Takarakka Bush Resort.

Camp site surface: Grass.

Facilities: Drinking water, flushing toilets, $1 coin-operated hot showers, wheelchair-accessible toilet and shower, picnic tables, gas barbecues.

Open fires: Prohibited.

Generators: Not permitted.

Essentials to bring: Sealable containers for rubbish, insect repellent, $1 coins for showers.

Bookings: Book online, over-the-counter or by phone. The maximum length of stay at this camping area is 5 nights. Camp sites are often booked 6 months in advance; it is recommended bookings be made as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Big Bend camping area

Features: Sheer cliffs offer the perfect backdrop to this small, tranquil camping area. Please note that swimming is not permitted in the creek.

Location: At Big Bend, reached by a 19.4km return walk through the gorge from the visitor centre.

Access: The camping area can be reached on foot only.

Number of sites: Open area without separately defined sites. Maximum number of campers is 10 people per night.

Camp sites are suitable for: walk-in camping only.

Camp site surface: Dirt.

Facilities: Composting toilet; one picnic table.

Open fires: Prohibited.

Generators: Not permitted.

Essentials to bring: Drinking water, gas stove, sealable rubbish containers, insect repellent. Treat any water collected from creeks before drinking it.

Bookings: Book online, over-the-counter or by phone. The maximum length of stay at this camping area is 2 nights. Advance bookings of at least 3 months are recommended for holiday periods.
