Camping information

Camping on Hinchinbrook Island National Park

Rugged and remote bush camping opportunities are available within this scenic island national park.

Camping permits are required and fees apply. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Park-specific conditions

A separate camping booking system is provided for sea kayakers and the Thorsborne Trail. Camping permits for educational, military and commercial groups must be obtained through the Rainforest and Reef Information Centre.

Please remain behind the temporary crocodile barriers at The Haven and South Macushla camping areas at all times.

The Haven (Scraggy Point) camping area

Camping area features: sheltered with beach access. Please remain behind the temporary crocodile barriers at all times.

Location: western side of Hinchinbrook Island.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat but is tide-dependent. It is not available to Thorsborne Trail walkers.

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping and large groups.

Camp site surface: sand, dirt and grass.

Facilities: toilet, gas barbecue and picnic tables.

Open fires: prohibited.

Generators: not permitted.

North Macushla camping area

Camping area features: under shady trees and with beach access.

Location: north-east side of Hinchinbrook Island in Missionary Bay, south of Cape Richards.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat. It is not available to Thorsborne Trail walkers.

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping.

Camp site surface: sand, dirt and grass.

Facilities: toilet, picnic tables. An 80 m walk to a shelter shed at South Macushla camping area.

Open fires: prohibited.

Generators: not permitted.

South Macushla camping area

Camping area features: under shady trees and with beach access.

Location: south of North Macushla in Missionary Bay on the north-east side of the island. Please remain behind the temporary crocodile barriers at all times.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat. It is not available to Thorsborne Trail walkers.

Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping.

Camp site surface: sand and grass.

Facilities: toilet, water (not suitable for drinking), shelter shed and picnic tables.

Open fires: prohibited.

Sunset Beach camping area

Location: on the north-east side of Hinchinbrook Island in South Shepherd Bay adjacent to Eva Island.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat. It is not available to Thorsborne Trail walkers.

Camp site surface: sand, dirt and grass.

Facilities: no facilities.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat. Access is weather-dependent and a good knowledge of the waters and hazards is essential. This camping area is not available to Thorsborne Trail walkers.

Camp site surface: sand, dirt and grass.

Facilities: no facilities.

Agnes Beach camping area

Camping area features: bush camping with beach access.

Location: eastern side of Hinchinbrook Island, south of Little Ramsay Bay and north of Zoe Bay.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat. Camping is only permitted between April and September to protect nesting seabirds. For the rest of the year access is weather-dependent and a good knowledge of the waters and hazards is essential. This camping area is not available to Thorsborne Trail walkers.

Sea kayaking camping areas

Camping area features: camping areas with beach access at various locations.

Location: eastern side of Hinchinbrook Island along the coast between George Point and Ramsay Bay.

Access: the camping area is accessible by sea kayak.

Number of sites: there are nine camping areas that are open without separately defined sites. Up to 12 people are permitted at each camping area with a maximum of six people per group. Sea kayakers are not required to specify the number of nights at each camping area. Camping outside of the designated areas is not permitted.
